Digital Learning and Corona virus in the world – Ciscasquapro

8 Challenges that learners experience when using online classes

The directives of the lockdown experienced in most of the countries in the world has interfered with the school calendar. To pasue Education, this has made a good number of students find refuge in online classes by using platforms such as zoom , Google classroom and Google meet this, for more visit Google Support

Learners taking an online class.

However this has not been always easy as there are a lot of challenges that learners go through during their online lessons. Some of these challenges are:

  • Lack of internet connection in rural areas.
  • Some parents are not able to meet the extra expenses that come with internet such as paying for home fibre network or buying of bundles.
  • There is disruption when lessons are going on such as; poor internet signals, blackouts due to power failure or lack of a quiet place as classes takes place in the houses where other members are going on with their duties causing background noise and interfering with the learners concentration.
  • Computer illiteracy. Using computers for online classes needs one to have some skills. While this should be the case, some learners face some challenges when connecting to class or when needed to follow the lesson smoothly.
  • Long hours on the screen. When learners are attending their classes, they are expected to be glued to the screen for long hours as all lessons are being taught through computers. If not using a computer, the students is forced to use a mobile phone which makes them struggle a lot reading and navigating to different pages as they take notes from the teacher. In any way, online lessons are causing stress and most of students who were not used to this style of learning have complained of headache and eye problems.
  • They are not able to participate fully like in a normal class. Audio and connection issues contribute to this.
  • The teacher might not be able to cater for slow learners. After online class, the learner has no other chance to engage with the teacher for the concept that was not well understood.
  • Ignorance of some of the parents who don’t care whether the child is learning or not. Technology to them is a bother and should not interfere with their busy schedule. In such a scenario, the learner is disadvantaged.

These challenges are making life difficult to both the child and the parents. See also 5 reasons why parent cannot stay with their children As the dilemma of when schools open continues, it seems that these challenges are not leaving us soon. My Life in the village(pt3)..Ciscas

To catch up with the story, see the previous part.

It was during one of the school holidays. My mother had put a tight schedule to make sure we were always busy as always. All Tuesdays were spared for a duty of fetching firewood from a neighbouring forest. It was not an obvious thing because the forest was guarded and so we had to play our cards well to make sure that we were not caught. To us, this was not a difficult task as we always knew how to manoeuvre our way.

On that day, I woke up early. Alerted other girls from the neighbourhood and finally we had made a group of eight girls. We knew going to the forest alone could be risky and that is why we made sure we formed a strong group. Equipped with all what we needed such like pangas, axes and ropes, there we went to pursue our mission.

Don’t dare to make a move, if you try to act weirdly, you might go back to your mother in a different form!

A scaring voice from one of the guards thundered

We were all scared to death as we did not know our fate. They tied our hands with our own ropes and frogmarched us to an open field inside the forest before taking us to their station where they locked us in a shanty room. For all this time, we hadn’t noticed that Florah, one of the girls, was not with us! Where could she be? Did she manage to escape or something bad has happened to her? Everyone of us was worried. We knew the forest was not the best place to be and especially late in the evening due to some wild animals which used to take the advantage of the dark to harass the village.

It was now getting late, yet we had no idea what was in store for us. We could here the guards conversing outside but we comprehended nothing at all as they were from a different community. No one understood their language. We tried to scream to attract their attention, but the effort bore no fruits. One of them could understand some words from our language but what he did was just to scold us commanding us to keep quiet.

Finally, it was dark. There was no need to continue pleading for our freedom. After all, being in that room was safer than walking aimlessly in the forest which could be more dangerous for us. What about our parents? They must have been worried waiting for us to return home with no avail!

We tried to get some sleep but the place was too cold for most of us apart from Daisy. Neither the noise that we made nor the cold in the room could deter her visit to the slumber land.

The night was so long that we all wished for the sunrise. Everything seemed quiet apart from scaring sounds of wild animals which could be heard from time to time. Some of as couldn’t bear it any logger. They tried to build some warmth by crowding together. This helped them to get some sleep, but it wasn’t the case with Judith and I. No matter how much we tried to close our eyes, no urge of sleep dared to give us a courtesy call. We were forced to endure with the situation knowing that we had no way out!

Before we could see the morning sun rays, our worrying peace was interrupted by noise and commotion from outside. We hurriedly tried to alert those of us who were sleeping. Everybody was awake when we heard the deafening shout from a man whom we couldn’t recognise his voice!…..what next?….don’t miss the next part…let’s go this journey together….below this story, I request that you follow me….kindly share your opinion as you comment...let’s meet next time and know what happened.

What next for Kenya

Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera in kenya have been under lockdown for sometimes now. Today, President Uhuru lifted the lockdown but maintained the curfew hours.

It is expected that most of the people who were locked in Nairobi will now find their way to rural area where they have really missed to be. Life at the city has been hard to many since the strike of the pandemic.

Some lost their jobs and they are unable to feed their families. They prefer sending children and wives to countryside where there is plenty of food.

The worry is, as this large number migrate from towns to rurals, there is a possibility of the virus spreading even more. Moreover, most of the aged parents are in rurals and they are at a greater risk contracting the virus as they welcome their relatives from town.

On the other hand, those in transport business will have something to smile for. People will rush to be out of town as soon as possible, therefore ,increasing their revenue. Since the Nairobi lockdown, most of the vehicles have been parked with nothing to do. You can also see my previous post on traveling.

Still waiting to see how things will unfold….feel free to leave a comment…Do visit my other posts here. For future post …. follow.

What I did in 1963 – Ciscasquapro

It is normal during morning rush hour at the town to have a lot of traffic as many people struggle to reach their places of work in time. One morning, there was this old man who wanted to go to town. He had some land issues he wanted to solve at Lands Office, but competing with the young people whom seemed not to recognize his age was not easy. He had to stay longer at the stage/bus terminals… ..You can also see other posts here

Finally, a bus arrived. Seeing the old man, the conductor gave him the first chance to get a seat. He then started collecting the fare from the passenger. He reach where the old man was sitting and requested him to pay for the ticket. To his surprise, the old man became very agressive almost fighting the young and well built conductor. The conductor was annoyed and they started exchanging bitter words. All over a sudden, the old man stood up charged like a wounded buffalo and said,

Young man, if you think you are strong enough, continue arguing with me. You will regret the day you were born after I have done what I did in 1963!

All the passengers were shocked. They pleaded with the conductor to live the man alone. After arriving to their destination, they all alighted. “Excuse me, before you go, would you mind to tell us what you did in 1963?” the young man asked the old man.

He laughed exposing his toothless gum.”Okay, if you want to know, well and good I will tell you…in 1963, I had no money to pay for transport though I wanted to go to my uncle’s place and so I had to walk miles away!…that is what I could have done….walk upto my destination!”

If you were the conductor, what could you have done? Leave a comment.

What will happen to patients of Covid 19 in Kenya – Ciscasquapro

It is sad that the country cannot support the covid 19 patients in public hospitals and therefore advocating for homecare based therapy. This may be a big task as a number of citizens might not be able to handle the patients. It can also lead to more spread of the virus. If the children are not safe from covid 19, how will it be possible for family members to take care of the victims without the required attire? Remember Impact of Covid 19 on traveling has contributed to so many other challenges. This means that family members cannot travel to visit their sick relatives of whom they are supposed to be taking care of. It is like the pandemic is not leaving us soon. According to how things are going, the numbers of affected people is increasing day by day. And if this continues, Should kenyan students seat for their national exams this year? The irony is, school were closed because of one case of Covid 19, now they are expected to be opened when the number is increasing. With this homecare based treatment, will the parents be able to handle cases of the virus in schools? I think this is an issue that need to be revisited.

Most of the learners in some of the developing countries are not gaining from digital migration that is taking place in most part of the world. Like in kenya, children from vulnerable backgrounds cannot afford purchasing smart gadgets leave alone paying for the internet. Moreover, most of the teachers who are supposed to teach the learners using the technology skills are also not well equipped.I am requesting all well wishers to join hands to assist this children and the teachers. The donations received will be used to buy necessary equipment and for teachers facilitation programs.

What every man, father or dad should know- ciscasquapro

Today marks the third Sunday of June which most part of the world recognize and celebrate fathers. I felt that I have to write this few lines on the fathers who leave the family responsibilities to the mothers and disappear from the seen just to come back when children are all grown. They misuse their youthful life only to return home when they have nothing to offer. Have a watch at this video. It is a special dedication to all Fathers.

Others are just there in the house leaving all responsibilities to the mothers. They can’t provide even a pencil to the school going child. They don’t want to work. It’s the duty of the mother to raise children and be the bread winner at the same time. Such fathers should understand that the children are watching and soon they will be grown-ups.

Fathers…remember you are the head of the family

Some are absent fathers only seen when there is curfew directives. Sometimes children see them after a fortnight or so, yet they live in the same house and when they appear, they want to be felt by making sure everyone responds when the cough. They don’t find it important to engage in raising children and they assume the task should be left to mothers only.

We have seen some fathers who don’t bother whether the child is sick or not, school fees is paid or not, took breakfast or not and some left school meetings as a mother- duty – only. They have never attended any school meetings. Not because they are busy, but that is meant for mothers as they say.

When these children grow up, they will recognize their mother more. This is where complains start coming up. Some accuse mothers that they have poisoned the children so much that they never recognize nor respect their father.

Respect is earned…if you need it, then work for it!

I have this message to all Fathers, you might think that participating in bringing up children is not necessary, but you will not escape from the repercussions. You will need these children at your old age, be part of their lives. They will also recognize you as a caring father. Sometimes what they only need is your wise words!

Fathers, money is not everything, your presence matters too.

Be there for your children, whether you have money or not, your love to them means a lot!…and when you grow old, they will not need any introduction to address you. Let us all take part fully in raising our children. The task is not as easy as it may look to be.

Fathers… don’t just father the child…be a Dad too!

Why business has been affected at Namanga -Tanzania border -Ciscas

The pandemic has made the smooth running of business at the border a bit hectic. Disagreement between Kenya and Tanzania on testing of corona virus has made the truck drivers spend days before they are cleared at the border. Some days ago, the two governments (kenya and Tanzania) tried to come up with a solution which is trying to work but not to the expectation of the traders.

The border used to be a busy place where even small business people were getting their catch. Fear of the novel virus has reduced the movement in and out of the neighbouring countries bringing a negative impact to the business sector.

Impact of Covid 19 on traveling-ciscasquapro

Coming and going out of Nairobi has been prohibited for several weeks now. The pandemic has come with strict rules that people were not used to. Most people who come from counties neighbouring Nairobi had their program changed drastically.

Most of them used to go to upcountry every weekend which is not possible right now. They are left with the option of communicating through phone calls or social media platforms. The situation is so disappointing as many were used to visit their loved ones any time they felt like. No traveling now and Stay At Home – is the slogan that everybody should adhere to.Transport industry has also been affected especially those ‘matatus’ that were used to ferry people to and from Nairobi.

It is sometimes hard to wake up to a reality. The time when we used to enjoy our holidays is long gone. Every holiday had it’s style for celebrations. Sometimes we would prefer to go swimming on a cool afternoon after enjoying our favorite meals.

Enjoying the family union was the most interesting thing as this was the only day family members would retire from their busy schedule. It used to be fun! We could meet new friends as we explored the nature. We really miss those days!……click the link to see why we could not do it the normal way.

Madaraka Day

1st June has always been a vibrant day with dozens of activities in kenya. Many people wake up early to go and catch up with live proceedings of the ceremony in different counties. For those who don’t make it to the venues, they follow the events through television or social media platforms.

This year things are different. Kenyans have woken up to a dull day where no holding events is allowed due to the covid 19 pandemic. The celebrations are no longer there. Visiting of parks, friends and relatives is now in the past until the country feel it is safe from the corona virus.

Though a bit boring, Kenyans have no option but to stay at home as directed by the government. It is always good to be safe than sorry. Happy Madaraka Day to all Kenyans where they are globally. STAY SAFE!

Why is Africa associated with black colour?

For a long time, Africa has been associated with people who are black in complexion. We have some countries in Africa which their citizens are not black. Most of these are in northern part of Africa. Now if people think Africa means black, where will we classify these countries which their citizens are not black or chocolate in complexion?

Why China?

We have been getting most of our products from China. Best herbs to treat our illness, electronics, latest phones, and anything else one can think of is imported from China. My worry is, did we also import the virus? I think it’s time to know things to import and those not to! It has been very hard to get rid of the virus!
